Soundtrack
Song #1: "American Idiot"
Artist: Green Day
Explanation: This song relates to Holden's apathy towards school and the people who are in charge of him. A large theme in this song is distaste of the government and a desire to not be like other people under it's control. Holden often expresses how he would like to not be a "phony" and how all other people are "phonies." This is also funny because while Holden is smart and tries to act separately from others, he is still very much like them and fails the majority of his classes as an American citizen.

Song #2: "Brothers"
Artist: Dean Brody
Explanation: Early on the book we learn of the death of Holden's brother Allie. Holden treasures Allie and finds him to be more or less a perfect being. One of his main artifacts is a baseball glove filled with poetry. While the brothers were separated in different ways in the song versus the book (in the song the older brother goes to war) the underlying message of brother love, fear of separation, and wishing that the one who remained could replace the one who left so that he would be spared. The song is very touching and reminds me of Holden's grief and of his bittersweet memories sprinkled throughout the book as they are in the song.

Song #3: "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)"
Artists: Fergie, Q-Tip, and GoonRock
Explanation: This song is about not caring who one's partner is and the callousness of the party age which Holden lives around. This fits well with just about any scene where he's in a party or in a club because the spirit of the song and Holden's philosophy is impermanence.

Song #4: "What Was I Thinkin'"
Artist: Dierks Bentley
Explanation: Holden often behaves recklessly to pursue his own self interests. He is impulsive as seen when he drops school to jump on a train to live alone in New York. This song is about a man who pursues a girl because she's attractive, the attractiveness throws the protagonist off and he ends up in dangerous situations such as facing a father with a shot gun. Holden, when experiencing life, chases the attractive and ends up in danger.

Song #5: "Build God, Then We'll Talk"
Artist: Panic At The Disco
Explanation: This song was chosen because of Holden's awkward and uncomfortable encounter with a prostitute. The song is about a prostitute and makes fun of intimacy and isolation. Holden has problems with intimacy and isolation because of the girl he lost and because he turned down the prostitute to talk rather than to have sex making her very uncomfortable.

Song #6: "Soldier In the Rain"
Artist: Henry Mancini - Brass On Ivory
Explanation: Henry Mancini died young and his wife holds this song as one of her favorites though other tunes of his such as "Pink Panther" are more popular. She finds it a melancholie bittersweet. This song follows well with the scene where Holden is drunk as a skunk and staggering around New York City and Central Park. There are several opportunities where he could have been seriously injured such as falling in the lake. He also held his fist to his stomach pretending he'd been shot and wasn't going to make it, which this song portrays in a sad and noble way that Holden would likely have found fitting.

Song #7: "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow"
Artist: The Soggy Bottom Boys
Explanation: This song pertains to Holden's depression and his dislike of everything due to unfortunate circumstances he's faced in life. After Allie died Holden pushed away all of the people who cared for him and who he cared for back. This fits well with the line "He has no friends to help him now"

Song #8: "Holland Road"
Artist: Mumford and Sons
Explanation: This song is slow, sad, and reflective. One of the lines speaks of coming home to where you know what you believe in. When Holden comes home to Phoebe and they have the opportunity for a real sibling-sibling speech it reminded me of this song because of the idea of faith and reflection.

Song #9: "Wires"
Artist: The Neighbourhood
Explanation: This song is about the death of someone close to them. When Holden loses Allie he's crushed and blames most of the world around him.

Song #10: "Skyfall"
Artist: Adele
Explanation: Holden appears to suffer from depression. He doesn't find many things fun, but calls upon his dead brother and his little sister to help him through situations. He often seems to feel as if most of the world is against him and as though he needs his siblings to face the crumbling world around him. Skyfall, from the James Bond movie is a slow, sad, Adele song about watching the world crumble around you and standing tall by someone you love.
